THE PARADOX OF CHOICE

Listen to Barry Schwartz's conference about freedom and choosing in life. Then answer some questions.

Answer these questions:

1- Do you agree with Barry Swartz’s idea that having choices produces paralysis rather than liberation?

2- We end up less satisfied when we have a lot of things to choose than when we have less options. Discuss.

3- The way in which we value things depends on what we compare them to. Do you agree?

4- If we have a lot of choices we aren’t satisfied because we compare what we have with what we expect, and we get disappointed. Has it happened to you?

5- It is true that to have some choices is better than none but it is not true that to have too many choices is better than some. What do you think?

6- Too many choices hurt because the situation makes us feel bad. Do you agree?

7- What does the fishbowl represent? Is it true that if you break the fishbowl you won’t have freedom but paralysis because you reduce satisfaction?

8- Do you agree with the idea that we ALL NEED a fishbowl?

9- Life is a matter of choice. What does this sentence mean?

10- What is the message of Barry Swartz?
